Can The Spam
Ken Crandall
A free program (POPfile) is an excellent
program for controlling Spam when used with a POP3 compliant email
service. It will work with the following popular email programs with
detailed instructions for Outlook Express, Outlook, Eudora, and
Pegasus. This workshop will go through the installation, setup and
"training the program" to eliminate spam.
From the POPfile website:
In the
Press
In a short time, POPFile
can achieve amazing accuracy -- The Washington Post,
It's free, open source,
multi-platform and very cool. [...], with surprisingly little training of the
engine, it's helped to turn the tide for me. --
POPfile has the truly
revolutionary feel that the first Web browsers and instant message clients had. -- InternetWeek,
It represents a significant change
in Internet communications. -- InternetWeek,
POPFile [...] does a wonderful
job. -- New Scientist,
POPfile has been 96.4% accurate for me. I love
it. -- Ken Crandall

In the May
issue of Nostalgia magazine that is
dedicated to "Remembering the History of Puget Sound, Washington",
you will find an article entitled "A
Good Place to Be" written by our own Delores Davis, Instructor of
Writing Your History. Delores practices what she teaches in this article by
recounting her experiences as a black coed at Seattle University, 1948. Nice to
learn more about you and your college days, Delores. If you want to know more
about her journey pick up a copy of Nostalgia.
Nostalgia
magazine is looking for you if you have history in either word or
pictures that covers the past two centuries. Jot down your stories and mail
them to Nostalgia Magazine, P.O. Box 25432, Seattle, WA 98125, or email them to
info@nostalgiamagazine.us You too may be in print.
There was a
nice showing of Granpals at the VIBES reception at the Bellevue
Botanical Gardens. It was a beautiful day and several came early and took
advantage of the garden tour that was offered. The food was extra
special.
Some of our members were specially honored at this VIBES
reception. Receiving 5 year pins were: Lorraine Gold, Sue Grieff and Joann
Swanson. Those with 6 years of volunteering were Pat Fitzgerald and Jo Ann
Tuttle; 7 years - Beverly Feichter;
and 9 years Betty and Burt Block, Irene Fernandes, and Patricia Herzog. A great big pat on
the back AND THANKS to these fine folks.
Once again we were catered to. This time by the staff
of Phantom Lake. In the past this has always been a wonderful gathering
and it was again this year.
.We had a very pleasant event with wonderful cakes,
fruit and punch. The centerpieces were cookie flowers that Jill's
daughter had decorated for us and each Granpal took one home. Nancy Harsh, Granpals Coordinator
reported, "There was a good attendance - about 13 or 14 of us. I'm
slowly getting to meet and know most of them."
Thanks
Nancy for a great job of coordinating this year
ANOTHER
SCAM!!
Ken Crandall discovered the following Internet address that details
a new scam whereby you can be charged large phone bills if you get a
"dialer" program installed on your computer when you are surfing the
web. The article tells you how to protect yourself.

ON THE MOVE AGAIN
Our classroom is moving
again. This time back to our old quarters however it is a newly constructed
school. So it is not to our old quarters but only to our original address.
There is a large classroom equipped with modern equipment. Attend the Brown Bag
Social and take a peek. Register for a class and experience it first hand.

Remove Word Hyperlinks
Newer versions of Microsoft Word are Internet-aware. When you type in a Web
site address or e-mail address by default, Word turns this Internet-related
text into a hyperlink so you can automatically launch your browser or e-mail
program. This type of auto-feature is rarely useful to me and most of the time
just drives me nuts. Many times, I want a hyperlink to be just plain, old
boring text. In other words, I don't want the blue or underlining, and I'm
never going to click it. (Plus, if you import Word files into a desktop
publishing program, you know that extra formatting can cause problems!)
So the question is, how do you make Word stop autoformatting hyperlinks? The
procedure is slightly different in Word 2000 and Word XP, but in both cases,
you need to change options in two places. In Word 2000, choose
Tools|AutoCorrect. (In Word XP, you choose Tools|AutoCorrect Options instead.)
In the Autoformat as you Type tab, click to remove the checkmark next to
Internet and network paths with hyperlinks.
Now click the AutoFormat tab. Click to remove the checkmark next to Internet
and network paths with hyperlinks. Now Word won't automatically format your
hyperlinks and e-mail addresses. That's a huge relief for some of us, but the
change only affects new documents. It doesn't fix hyperlinks that are already
in your document.
Making a hyperlink or e-mail address plain, old text means you have to tell
Word that you don't want it to be a field. To change the hyperlink, highlight
it and press Ctrl+Shift+F9 to unlink the field. (Yes, you use the F9 function
key on the top row of your keyboard.) The hyperlink turns to plain text. If
there is still unwanted extra formatting, press Ctrl+spacebar to remove it.
