PUBLISHER

Publisher is a special class which is being offered this Spring. It still has a few openings. The instructor, Bill McPherson has offered the following description to help you in your decision to take this class. “We will use a powerful program, Microsoft Publisher, to create cards, calendars, invitations and newsletters. With the power of graphics and layout tools, Publisher can enable you to express your own creativity. You will be able to combine text and graphics in attractive projects, and add elements such as borders and tables to enhance the appearance of your projects.

Microsoft Publisher is powerful software because it draws on resources from other software, such as text from word processors and photos from photo editors. Its strength is the ability to arrange and "layer" these elements, keeping them anchored while permitting you to weave them together in a whole document that is greater than the sum of its parts.

We will learn to use the tools of Publisher while we discuss the elements of good design, such as the placement of graphics and the appearance of fonts. We will discuss the uses of published documents such as newsletters and web pages. Although this is not a course on designing web pages, one of the uses of Publisher is to create pages for use on a web site. A companion course on web design has been offered in the past and may be offered in the future.”

Call the voice mail 206-232-5892 if you are interested in enrolling in this exciting class that begins on April 25. Class fee for this course is $30.00.

HARRY SULLY IN PRINT

The latest issue of the SeniorNet Newsline, Spring 2003, profiled our own Harry Sully on the second page – picture and all. Thanks Harry for all your contributions throughout the years. Your services are very much appreciated.

EVACUATED FROM ACAPULCO!

Barbara and Roger Dalton had a rather unusual experience when the cruise ship (Celebrity-Infinity) developed a propulsion unit problem which terminated the cruise in Acapulco and after three days of frustration trying to locate their friends from England who had been flown out to San Diego, Barbara and Roger finally flew home from L.A a day early and pretty worn out by the whole happening. This cruising is sure hard work! Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh! Most of us wouldn’t know about it! If you want to send us, a lot of us would take the frustration.

JILL McLEOD, Principal of Phantom Lake Elementary School, spoke at the March Annual Meeting on the progress of the school construction. She was elated to report, “that the school was a month ahead of schedule and under budget.” We looked at the configuration of the school and where our classroom will be with water and all. Everything will be all new and shiny bright for the opening in September. Target time is to pack everything up in June and it will be stored at the new school until the rooms are completed for move in. The Brown Bag will be scheduled in August at the new (old site) school. More information to follow as it evolves.

ALL FAIRS A HUGE SUCCESS

SeniorNet was visible once again at the Overlake Hospital Active Senior Fair under the leadership of Joe Pontecorvo, and at the Genealogy Fair with John Wise coordinating. Both events were highly successful with many people interested in what we had to offer and also with some people volunteering to help as instructors. Delores Davis reported, “that the Black Roots Seminar was highly interested in her Life History Course and she presented two seminars to over 100 people.”

WATER OR COKE?

WATER

COKE

  1. In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
  2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of coke and it will be gone in two days.
  3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and forget it; let the "real thing" sit for one hour, then flush it clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.
  4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

  1. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.
  2. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.
  3. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for sumptuous brown gravy.
  4. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION:

  1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase in osteoporosis.
  2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate) the commercial truck must use the Hazardous Material place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.
  3. The distributors of coke have been using it to clean the engines of their trucks for about 20 years! Now the question is; would YOU like a glass of water or coke?

The three little words are: "Hold On, Please ..."

Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off (instead of hanging-up immediately) would make each Tele-marketing call so much more time-consuming that sales boiler rooms would grind to a halt.

When you eventually hear the phone company's "beep-beep-beep" tone, you know it's time to go back and hang up your handset, which has efficiently completed its task. Three little words that eliminate telephone soliciting.

Do you ever get those annoying phone calls with no one on the other end?

This is a telemarketing technique where a machine makes phone calls and records the time of day when a person answers the phone. This technique is used to determine the best time of day for a "real" sales person to call back and get someone at home.

What you can do after answering, if you notice there is no one there, immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times, as quickly as possible.

This confuses the machine that dialed the call and it kicks your number out of their system.

Since doing this, our phone calls have decreased dramatically.

Another Good Idea:

When you get "ads" enclosed with your phone or utility bill, return these "ads" with your payment; let the sending companies throw their own junk mail away. When you get those "pre-approved" letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, Do not throw away the return envelope.

Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes, right?
Well, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool little, postage-paid return envelopes.

Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner to American Express.

Send a pizza coupon to Citibank.
If you didn't get anything else that day then just send them their blank application back!

If you want to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn't on
anything you send them.

You can even send the envelope back empty if you want to just to keep them guessing!

Eventually, the banks and credit card companies will begin getting their own junk back in the mail.

Let's let them know what it's like to get lots of junk mail, and the best of all they're paying for it...Twice!

Let's help keep our postal service busy since they are saying that
e-mail is cutting into their business profits, and that's why they need to increase postage costs again.
