WEEKLY ASSISTANCE WORKSHOP LABORATORY TIME

WILL BE CONTINUED

Get your questions answered and problems solved or just come out and work on your project and get solutions instantly!

The new LAB series will begin Wednesday morning March 12th from 9:30am to 12:00 noon.  The series will continue for a total of five Wednesdays ending on April 9th. Mark your calendars now!

SeniorNet is again offering members and guests the opportunity to attend our Assistance Workshop LAB sessions.  You can bring your questions and concerns regarding software and hardware and Instructors will be available to help you one-on-one.

“During our last series,” Vice President, Adella Granger, and LAB coordinator, reports, “we had students bring their problem Laptops and Hard Drive  equipment for analysis.  Our experts were able to determine the problems and send home happy students.

One of our students, Howard Donaldson, brought Scott Gilson to one of our Lab Sessions.  He was so impressed that he joined SeniorNet and signed up for two Spring classes.  To show our appreciation, Howard was awarded with a free class.  This could happen to you.”

We encourage you to take this opportunity to introduce friends to our SeniorNet Organization.  You do not have to be a SeniorNet member to attend a LAB session.  If they have a problem, we are eager to help them.  If you have any special user questions or concerns, our Instructors will be happy to get them resolved.

These sessions will continue in our classroom at Phantom Lake Elementary School in Bellevue, 302 – 151st Place NE.

KAFFEE KLATCH: You are invited to participate in the SeniorNet Kaffee Klatch on Tuesday, March 4, at 11:30 am, held at the Crossroads Mall Food Circus, where you can get a bite to eat and “kibbutz” with old and new found friends.

STILL TIME TO REGISTER FOR CLASS

While it is only the end of February, some SeniorNet classes are already completed! Our classes run through the month of May. Louise Flora, Registrar, stated that, “Some of our more popular classes are close to filling up. If you have been sitting on the fence about registering, then the time to do it is now!” If you want to learn more about Photo Editing and Scanning only a couple spaces remain in Hal Mozer’s Photo-2 class which will begin on Wednesday, April 23. One classes in Word Processing (Word-4) still is open in late April. This class begins April 22 thru May 27. There is so much to learn about the Word program that a repeat class is always useful. Then if you “think” you know it all try the Intermediate Word Processing (Word IM-1). Instructor Chuck Goldstein has a world of information waiting for you.

If you have upgraded your computer to XP, you may need help or just a reinforcement of what you already know. In March Dave Abernathy will be instructing on the XP Operating System beginning March 11 thru April 8.

Tired of paying high prices for greeting cards, Marge Langley can help you out. She has a Greeting Card Class – a real bargain at $10.00. Just buying 2 or 3 cards will pay for the class. Two days of 2 hours each Tuesday April 22 and April 29. Your cards will look better than those purchased and be personalized.

Both of the email programs – AOL and Outlook Express which begin in March have openings – They are also priced at $10.00 for 3 hours of instruction.

SeniorNet does have Genealogy courses if you are interested. There will also be other groups there to educate you. John Wise will be coordinating this event.

EXPERTS STUMPED

AT THE FEBRUARY MEMBERSHIP PANEL DISCUSSION!

After the normal February membership meeting we had another panel with Betty Block, Chuck Goldstein, Ross Roberts and Gordon Young on board, to answer specific users computer questions. One question about using Outlook Express digressed into determining if the user was using Microsoft Word as the editor for messages being typed in Outlook Express. Ken Crandall, Panel Moderator, states, “ I decided to use the laptop computer and a projector to show everyone how you could determine if Word was the selected editor for Outlook Express. After looking at many of the available Outlook Express options, I agreed to look it up at a latter time and to send out the answer with our ever knowledgeable Puget Sound newsletter.”

To this end, I have copied a part of the PC Magazine review of Outlook Express version 6.0 below.

“Outlook Express even includes a Usenet newsgroup reader. Don't expect any powerhouse features here, though. You can't download headers from a server and then decide what to do with the full messages, as you can with Outlook. And you can't use Word as your editor when creating e-mail. Instead, you must use Outlook Express's editor, which is fine for most people's needs.”

This is the problem with computers. Too many options!Several of us trying to answer the user question use “Outlook” instead of “Outlook Express” as our e-mail program. In Outlook there is an option under the Mail Format tab reading “Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages”.

We can be stumped once in a while, but for the most part, we are pretty good at answering your questions. Therefore, I can highly recommend that you take advantage of “question and answer” panels at specific membership meetings and/or come to our newly initiated “Assistance Workshop laboratory” sessions where you can get one-on-one assistance for your computer problems using the computers in our classroom. You can learn about the next lab sessions else where in this newsletter.

GRANPALS

If you bump into a Granpal (those are Seniors who help out the students with reading, writing, arithmetic, etc., at the Phantom Lake Elementary School) check out the new name tags.  A big thank you to Harry Shedd and Ross Roberts for seeing this project to the finish,

Irene Fernandes, recorder of the hours, reports that we posted over 92 hours last month.  That sounds really good since it was for January, a month of  traditional sick time and trips south. February was a short month and came up about the same with hours. We do have a disabled granpal, Ken McDivitt, who fell last month and cracked a bone in his hip.  Get back on your feet soon, Ken.

Nancy Harsh, Granpal Coordinator

COORDINATORS ANNOUNCED

Ray French, Instructors Coordinator, announced the following, “Dick Thompson is the new coordinator for Windows XP and Bill McPherson has agreed to coordinate Word.

Outlines and content are being discussed, reviewed, revised and will be ready for the instructors for the fall.”

CPR TRAINING

In January twenty-two instructors, assistants, and Granpals participated in the three hour CPR training by the Bellevue Fire Department. If you have not taken CPR classes for a while or have forgotten what you learned, go to the next available class near you. What you did learn has changed and is now simplified. You could be the instrument that saves someone’s life.

The classroom now is equipped with gloves and breather mouth pieces in the event there should ever be an emergency. The phones have always been marked with where and how to call in the correct information.

Also a good idea to carry one with you in your car, pocket or purse
.

DO YOU HAVE A CELL PHONE?

Read on for an important notice for 911 Calls.

When you dial 911, a phone number appears on your phone screen. The number displayed may not be your actual dialable phone number. It may be a routing number used by the wireless network. Dialing the phone’s routing number from another phone will not result in a call to your phone. Therefore, when you call 911, you should not rely on the number on your phone screen as being the number at which you can be reached. Remember to give the 911 operator your actual dialable phone number if asked for a callback number rather than the number displayed on your phone screen.

12 Step Program

EVERYONE PLEASE PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR MONITOR AND REPEAT THESE WORDS WITH ME:

1) I will NOT get bad luck, lose my friends, or lose my mailing lists if I DON'T forward an email!

2) I will NOT hear any music or see a taco dog, if I do forward an e-mail.

3) Bill Gates is NOT going to send me money, Victoria's Secret doesn't know anything about a gift certificate they're supposed to send me.

4) Ford will NOT give me a 50% discount even if I forward my e-mail to more than 50 people!

5) I will NEVER receive gift certificates, coupons, or freebies from Coca-Cola, Cracker Barrel, Old Navy, Outback Steakhouse or anyone else if I send an e-mail to 10 people.

6) I will NEVER see a popup window if I forward an e-mail .  NEVER-NEVER!

7) There is NO SUCH THING as an e-mail tracking program, and I am not gullible enough to think that someone will send me $100 for forwarding an e-mail to 10 or more people!

8) There is NO kid with cancer through the Make-a-Wish program in England collecting anything!  He did when he was 7 or 8 years old.  He is now cancer-free and 35 years old and DOESN'T WANT ANYMORE POST CARDS or GET-WELL CARDS.

9) The government does not have a bill in Congress called 601B (or whatever they named it this week) that if passed, will enable them to charge us 5 cents for every e-mail we send.

10) There will be NO cool dancing, singing, waving, colorful flowers, characters, or program that I will receive immediately after I forward an-mail.

NONE, ZIP, ZERO, NADA!!

11) The American Red Cross will NOT donate 50 cents to a certain individual dying of some never-heard-of disease for every e-mail address I send this to.
The American Red Cross RECEIVES donations.

12) And finally, I WILL NOT let others guilt me into sending things by telling me I am not their friend or that I don't believe in Jesus Christ.

If God wants to send me a message, I believe the bushes in my yard will burn before He picks up a PC to pass it on!  And my friends already know that I love them -- whether or not I respond to or forward an email.

Now, repeat this to yourself until you have it memorized, and send it along to at least 5 of your friends before the next full moon or you will surely be constipated for the next three months and all of your hair will fall out.

Dave Abernathy
