TUESDAY MORNING KAFFEE
KLATCH BEGINS ANOTHER NEW YEAR: Now that the dust has
settled and the decorations are nestled away for another year come out and
relax at the monthly informal, no-host SeniorNet Kaffee Klatch Tuesday,
January 7, at 11:30 am, held at the Crossroads Mall Food Circus. As usual,
you'll find us all pulling up tables to greet old friends and meet new arrivals
for an hour or so of socializing and answering any questions about computers,
etc.
JANUARY
MEMBERSHIP MEETING:
SeniorNet
will begin another year on Tuesday, January 21, at 10 am in the Crossroads
Mall Community Room. At the first membership meeting of the new year we
will be reviewing our goals that were set last spring and determine if we are
heading the right direction.
JOIN THE TEAM: Yes, you are reading another
issue of the online newsletter that was ably written and published by Phil
Scheier for the past three years. We are deeply indebted to Phil for his
insight, foresight and wisdom in producing the news and knowledge in a
lighthearted fashion. Now it is time for a new team to emerge and take over the
task of writing, editing and shipping the monthly newsletter. Many hands and
minds make this project simple. If you could help with this project, please
contact Helen Hesketh at senior@seniornetps.org
and mark the email "For: Helen Online Newsletter".
Clif Wuesthoff who has so faithfully mailed or as he says
"shipped" out this newsletter each month and has been the encouraging
force behind Phil to keep him on the straight and narrow, also would like to be
replaced. Although he can never be replaced, his duties can. Thanks Clif, for
hangin' in there with me this month and for all you have done over the past
three years.

December 17, 2002, "We returned last night 12/10. Antarctica was
spectacular and for everyone on the trip it was their number one lifetime's
destination. Extraordinary that a place of ice in myriad forms, ie, the land
(larger than US and Mexico), the mountains, icebergs, shelves and floes with no
indigenous peoples should engage our love and admiration. Lichens and
grasses were the dominant plant species; we did have a diver who collected film
of the rich and colorful life at 100 feet and more below the water surface.
Photographic studios all over the US are printing films/slides etc of the
entire penguin/seal/whales/birds and bergs of the Falklands, S. Georgia and
Antarctic Peninsular - so beware of future photography flashers who persist is
sharing travel adventures. Oh and by the way we did hear of a business
opportunity. There is interest in how to tow an iceberg to countries short of
water. One (can't remember size) would have enough drinking water to
supply UK for 10 years!
With the impossible email situation combined with location we now feel we are
slowly re-turning to another planet."

RAY PATES, one of our volunteers,
fought a valiant battle with cancer but lost in November. We will miss him even
though he was only with us for a short time.
Joe Walton writes, "I
am writing to let you know that one day, early in the new year, will be my last
here in San Francisco. The exact date is yet to be determined and should depend
upon completion of those matters concerning transition and continuity.
Certainly I will do all that I can to help the transition go smoothly. And the
regional consultants, who are the most important members of our learning center
support team, are still in place and will continue to be there for you and to
be your advocates within this organization.
Understandably, at this time, my mind has been much occupied with the
experiences of the past nine and a half years. Pursuing the growth and
development of this great learning center program of ours has provided me
opportunities to see and learn about much of our country and to visit places
that I might, otherwise, never have come to know and enjoy. I look forward to
future visits and longer stays.
If my calculations are accurate, during this time, I have driven over 40,000
miles; to meet with prospective sites, to help with new center trainings, to
visit with sponsors, participate in regional meetings and to attend learning
center functions. I do not want to count the number of "Whoppers" and
"Big Macs" that I have consumed during my travels but, if you are
interested, I can give you some hard-won tips on how to keep the mustard and
ketchup off your shirt as you eat and drive.
Rewarding, though the travel has been, it has been my association with you and
your friends and colleagues who make up our volunteer community that has so
enriched and made worthwhile this experience for me. Yours is an extraordinary
group of generous and talented people whose work has made better the lives of
tens of thousands in your communities. I take great pride in having been
associated with you. Thank you for welcoming me into your communities and into
your homes over the years. I have countless fond memories of our times
together. You have been the best possible company, both professionally and
personally.
Sadly, some very fine people who contributed much to our mission are no longer
with us. I fondly remember them also as I know you do.
If you would like to keep in touch with me in the future, and I hope that you
will, you can get my email address from your regional consultant. I will still
be sending out emails and digital photos
from time to time and will be pleased to stay in touch with you in that way at
least. I look forward to keeping up with events in your lives, so keep me
posted.
Best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year."
