NEW COMPUTERS ARE ALL UP AND RUNNING--The 13 new PC computers,
each with 128
Megs of memory, each with a big 10-Gig hard drive, each with a
screaming
666 Mhz speed, each with a big 17-inch monitor, are all up and
running in
time for Fall classes. Lets have a huge round of applause
for Ken Crandall
and all the volunteers who assisted in making this project a
success, from
those who procured the fund grant, to those who helped in
processing the new
computers from unpacking them, to setting them up, installing
software and
checking them out.
Pres. Helen Hesketh reports the 17 retired and
"tired" computers were
disposed of as follows:
Two Sony's reserved for internal use, Fourteen were auctioned
off at a
silent auction to the members at the August leadership meeting.
Twelve were
bid on and the two "lonely little petunias" left will
be donated after Board
approval, with one sold to a church.
UPCOMING LEADERSHIP MEETINGThe monthly Leadership Group
meeting is
scheduled, as usual, the third Tuesday of the month, Sept. 19th,
at 10 a.m.,
at the school, with Pres. Helen Hesketh presiding.
YUP! ITS KAFFEE KLATCH TIME TUESDAY, SEPT. 5- --Make a
note to attend our
monthly no-host Kaffee Klatch on Tuesday, Sept. 5th, at 11 a.m.,
at the
Crossroads Mall Food Circus, under the direction of its creator,
our own
Harry Sully. A great way to meet our colleagues, whether staff or
students,
over a cup of cawfee and
OH WHAT A WONDERFUL BROWN BAG BASH !--The fourth annual Brown
Bag social
held at the Phantom Lake Elementary School in Bellevue, where our
learning
center is located, on Thursday, August 24, was a huge success.
Heading this
project was Coordinator Delores Davis. The energy and excitement
for
SeniorNet was contagious. The theme for the day was
"Celebrate Our
Beginnings". For the first time in the history of SeniorNet
all the Learning
Center coordinators and presidents were in the same place at the
same
time. Jiggs Clark (the founder), Gene Raucher, Lyle Hernandez,
Clif
Wuesthoff and Helen Hesketh. Also present to honor Dr. David
McIntyre were
Irv Vernon, Ray Hansen, Molly Brackett who was second in command
during the
lengthy regime of Gene Raucher, Bob Swenson, Joe Pontecorvo and
Bill Urich,
former long-time curriculum coordinator, who drove Jiggs to the
luncheon..
All of the "old timers" were beaming as they greeted
each other and chatted
about old times and their great pride in the continuing growth of
the
all-volunteer SeniorNet Computer Learning Center of Puget Sound.
Coordinator Davis, opened the program by welcoming those
present and
introduced Helen Hesketh, president, who also welcomed about
seventy of the
old and new members and students. Jill Mcleod, Principal of the
school, once
again praised the SeniorNet computer-learning project along with
our
Granpals program to help tutor youngsters at the school in
various skills.
Helen then reported on where we have come from over the past year
or so.
Lyle introduced Dr. McIntyre whom we were honoring for his
participation in
the beginnings of SeniorNet. He was presented a plaque that read
"In
Appreciation of Dr. David J. McIntyre for making possible the
creation of
SeniorNet of Puget Sound Computer Learning Center and for the
opportunity of
thousands of senior citizens to join the computer world. From the
students
and volunteers of SeniorNet of Puget Sound." A plaque from
SeniorNet
national was also presented to Dr. McIntyre. It read as follows:
"With
gratitude SeniorNet is pleased to honor Dr. David McIntyre for
his generous
support and sponsorship of SeniorNet of Puget Sound Learning
Center." Signed
by Ann Wixon and Joe Walton.
THANKS FOR A GREAT EVENT go to Coordinator Delores Davis,
coordinator; Molly
Brackett and Marilyn Emerson for the history and decorations;
Louise Flora
who donated the flowers for the tables; Jim and Pat Braun for
caring for the
dessert table; Clif Wuesthoff, Joe Pontecorvo, John and Laura
Wise for
presenting educational programs; Bill Flick for keeping the cool
drinks
cool; Betty Block, Bert Block and Carmena Affek for greeting
people as they
arrived; Marge Langley who made greeting cards and stickers and
sold them
for the school food program; Clif Wuesthoff for signs; and
Virginia
Fusselman for caring for the history. And to top it off, King
5-TV was
present and videoed the entire program for a later broadcast.
The major goals of the Brown Bag Luncheon were achieved with
the
intermingling of staff, students and others interested in
learning how to
operate a PC computer. They chatted, asked questions about
classes and
programs, met other students and instructors, saw demonstrations
and enjoyed
refreshments. Several signed up for classes. In addition to some
free
materials, many software prizes and games were awarded, including
a gift
certificate for a free class. The all-volunteer SeniorNet charges
a nominal
fee for classes to help maintain and buy new equipment as needed.
CRANDALL ANNOUNCES STANDARD LOOK FOR NEW STUDENT
COMPUTERS A
long-sought ability to provide what is described as a
standard look for
the 13 new classroom computers has been achieved by Ken Crandall,
SeniorNet
Facilities Coordinator, a fancy name for the guy responsible for
keeping the
computers up and running, and his great volunteer crew. He
writes:
The classroom is ready for the new session. We have a
"standard" look for
all of the students computers. I believe that we should
preserve a
"standard" look (even if it is not the present
"standard"). This will
eliminate the constant student comment my computer
doesnt look like that.
I have also arranged the icons on the instructor's computer so
that the
icons that appear on the left side match those that appear on the
students
computers. Icons used only by instructors have been moved to the
right hand
side of the instructor's computer desktop.
Have a great training session this fall. We have great
new computers and
monitors for the students.
FREE DIRECTORY SERVICES---You want to get back in touch with
someone whose
address and phone you just cant find. You even forgot the
name of the town,
but you do recallyou hopethe state he/she lived in.
If youre online,
there is a service, oh yeah, a free service, which may help. Try
Infospace
s White Pages at www.infospace.com, and fill in as many blanks as
you can
and follow directions. This writer tried his own name, left out
the city,
but included the state. Bingo! It worked. And double-check your
spelling of
the name and the city or town. You select the state with a
drop-down menu.
Sometimes it helps to use the first letter of the first name, if
the first
try fails.
KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS--We frequently receive requests for a list
of commonly
used keyboard shortcuts (to replace mouse functions). Back by
popular demand, here's
a list to make computer use easier:
Shift-F10-----------------Right-click selected item
Ctrl-Esc------------------Display Start menu
Alt-[underlined letter]---Select menu command
Alt-Esc-------------------Switch to Taskbar's "next" open window
Alt-Tab-------------------Switch among open windows (hold Alt and

Ctrl-F10------------------Switch focus to menu commands (in any
Explorer window)
Ctrl-Tab------------------Rotate through dialog box tabs
Ctrl-Shift-Tab------------Rotate through dialog box tabs in reverse
Ctrl-Alt-Del--------------Display Close Program dialog box.
NEXT BIG REGISTRATION DEC. 7Here weve just
finished one very successful
registration for Fall classes, now getting underway with some 80
percent of
the classes already filled, with additional registrations
drifting in, and
its time to plan ahead for the next big registration at the
Crossroads
Mall. Just make a note to set aside the date to volunteer again.
Details to
follow in later editions.
CORRECTION: THE NEWS GETS BETTER-- Hal Mozer, one of the major
players in
working up the specs for the 13 new and very powerful computers
for our
hands-on computer training this Fall, stresses each new PC has
128 Megs of
memory, an actual doubling of the earlier-reported 64 Megs, which
means
greater speed and operating ease. And speaking of loading in the
power-generating memory, one of our members was visited this past
month by
his son, a computer writer from the Boston area with a special
gift for dad:
An additional 64 Megs of memory for his new computer which
originally came
with 128 Megs of memory, for a grand jet-speed total of 192 Megs.
Our
fellow Seniornetter now complains his computer is so fast it
literally tears
and sends out his messages even before he finishes writing them.
Some guys
are never happy.
