REMINDERS: You can always get the latest available information re classes, schedules etc., on our excellent website. See address above. The first Tuesday-of-the-month informal, no-host, socializing SeniorNet Kaffee Klatch will again be held at the Crossroads Mall Food Circus Tuesday, April 4, at 11 a.m.
HAIL TO OUR NEW LEADERS---Our great president for the past two years, HELEN HESKETH being the dedicated SeniorNet worker she is, agreed, albeit reluctantly, to take on another term as president of our expanding SeniorNet Computer Learning Center, when the nominating committee was unable to find a new president. Husband JOE cast the only dissenting vote. The Annual Leadership Meeting was held at the Bellevue Educational Service Center March 21, and featured a continental breakfast.
MARILYN EMERSON, sitting in for Nominations Chair HARRY SULLY who was vacationing in California with LOIS, presented the following nominees: Vice President, BILL BUMPAS; Secretary, DAVE LEWIS; Treasurer, BOB SWENSON; Member-at-large, ANNE SCHEINHOLZ. Other speakers included the Center’s sponsor, JILL MCLEOD, principal of the Phantom Lake School, which houses our computer classroom. Reports were given by Hesketh, Swenson, Facilities Coordinator KEN CRANDALL; Curriculum Coordinator HAL MOZER; Chair of the Volunteers, DELORES DAVIS; Chair of Granpals, PAT FITZGERALD, and JOE HESKETH with a report on the Washington Health Card group.
KEEPING ALL our computers working is Facilities Coordinator Crandall reporting on new improved DSL Internet access lines which have sped up our downloads, and other equipment upgrades. Granpals Chair Fitzgerald saluted the SeniorNet volunteers working with young students with their English and reading; Treasurer Swenson reported SeniorNet is operating in the black to properly maintain and constantly upgrade its equipment and cover operating expenses.
A
DESERVED SALUTE at the meeting went to Past Pres. LYLE HERNANDEZ for his
successful heroic efforts to revive SeniorNet here some years ago when
SeniorNet had to hastily abandon its former donated quarters on 116th Ave. NE,
in Bellevue because of space needs by the long-time generous owner of the
building. We can recall storing the computers and other equipment in a member’s
basement, until the Phantom Lake School offered to provide a needed classroom.
And the big day when the equipment was moved to the school and set up,
Hernandez was the guy who moved the process in making SeniorNet the big
operation it is today in serving seniors.
THEY ALL CAME—A large turnout of SeniorNet members at the March 4th Senior Fair sponsored by Overlake Hospital, which featured our working exhibit demonstrating the learning opportunities at the SeniorNet Computer Learning Center. And the large clusters of visitors around the SeniorNet display and demonstration , headed by JOE PONTECORVO, showed the growing interest among seniors in computers.
ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY FREE EMAIL, INTERNET ACCESS?---More and more computer users are experimenting with such free email and Internet access services such as WORLDSPY, FREEI, JUNO, BLUE NOTE, HOTMAIL, among others. Juno has expanded into free Internet access, although it also offers what it labels as a paid premium access service. Juno is gaining a reputation as a very efficient email and Internet access program. And of course there are others, including Worldspy.net, which won high praise in the April issue of Smart Money’s Tech Talk column for free email and Internet access with an average one-minute access time. This writer has downloaded www.worldspy.net, and after a few initial stumbles, has it working in fine fashion via Microsoft Internet Explorer.
SENIORNET’S HIGH ATTENDANCE—Registrar LOUISE FLORA is reporting outstanding attendance at our various classes with classes running 86 per center full for the January through June period this year. Coordinator Hal Mozer in praising these figures, also noted there are only 47 spaces now open, with 23 students on a waiting list for classes not yet started. More instructors and assistants are needed. Volunteers Coordinator Delores Davis also stressed the need for more volunteers for leadership roles, and asked students to polish their new computer skills by acting as class assistants.
STILL SPACE FOR STUDENTS—Registrar Flora reports that while classes for the Spring 2000 session are half over, the following class still had openings as this went to press: Word 3, April 19-May 31; Int. Word Processing (Works), April 19-May 31; Quicken Plus, April 24, 25 and 26. Web Design, April 24-May 22; File Management 3, May 1, 2 and 3; Word 4, May 5-June 16; Photo Editing, Scanning 2, May 9-May 23; Photo Editing, Scanning 3, June 6, 7 and 8; Genealogy, May 30, 31, and June 1-2.
CALL VOICE MAIL at 206-232-5892 and indicate your interest or send in registration forms to SeniorNet, PMB 309, 4038 Factoria Blvd. SE, Bellevue, WA 98006. Registration for Fall 2000 classes will be held Thursday July 13 at Crossroads Shopping Mall beginning at 10:00 AM. Catalogs and Newsletter will be mailed in June.
SOUPS’ ON—Two SeniorNet leadership group members have divulged their growing interest in---ready?—making good soup. DONALD B. POST confides he uses the Internet to gather recipes around the country, including a very hot recipe for soup, including how to make soup stock, from a New Orleans site. Don is wary of the heavy salt content of canned soups. Also, Past Pres. CLIF WUESTHOFF has discovered a traditional tasty Jewish treat, chicken soup, made by Manischewitz in package form, which includes powdered chicken soup plus a matzoh ball, which he recommends.
ON THE MEND—Recovering from recent knee surgery is JOHN STILZ, who writes he plans to “run and jump and hop and all those good things again” shortly. HAL MOZER and SUE traveled to an Elderhostel in Maui to aid in his recuperation from hip surgery. Our best wishes for fast recoveries.
