SENIORNET DEMONSTRATED  computer teaching techniques - Under the guidance of JOE PONTECORVO, KEN CRANDALL,  and CLIF WUESTHOFF, our SeniorNet presented computer learning opportunities for seniors at the Saturday, March 4th Overlake Hospital's Active Senior Fair held at the Best Western Bellevue Inn at 11211 Main St., from 10 am to 3 pm. Volunteers who staffed and demonstrated computer techniques, include BILL FLICK, SEENA  LALLY, RON CRUM, DAVE LEWIS and DELORES DAVIS. And of course our PRES. HELEN HESKETH was among those checking it out.

ENJOY A CUPPAA CAWFEE AND with your SeniorNet colleagues at the very informal and purely social no-host monthly Kaffee Klatch the first Tuesday morning of each month, starting around 11 am, at the Crossroads Mall Food Circus, 156th Ave. NE, and NE 8th.

HOW TO CUT PRINT CARTRIDGE COSTS-It's fun to print out stuff on your printer, to savor it, to file it away, or to pass it around/ But the cost of print cartridges with built-in ink tanks, run fairly high around the $20 to $25 or more mark. Many of our Seniornetters however, are using the filler-up method, using filler tanks to revamped original cartridges, or using specially designed modified printer cartridges which are designed to be fitted with the refill tanks. Some system allows you to use your original print head, open up a small plug, fill it with ink, and you're back in business. Thus, you don't have to buy a complete inked new print cartridge, just the much cheaper refill tank. There are also replacement tanks for color users.

THIRTY-NINE DIFFERENT SENIORNET CLASSES-REGISTRAR LOUISE FLORA reports "We have filled 85% of our classes as of 2/23/00 - There are 473 potential class spaces open and 403 of them are filled."  There are a total of 39 different classes, she reports. Because of a lack of instructors or low enrollment,

three classes had to be canceled. These were: Spreadsheets, Juno email and one for Intermediate Windows."

A POPULAR COURSE--A Windows Overview class was added several weeks ago, Louise reports, and filled almost immediately.  There are still openings in Intermediate Word Processing (WORKS) WPI-2, Word Processing (WORD) Word-4, Quicken Plus QP-1,  Photo Editing & Scanning, PHOTO-2 & PHOTO-3, File Management, FILE-3. Basic Internet, NET-5 & NET-6, Web Design, WEB-1. Call the SeniorNet Computer Learning Center phone, or log on to our Website, (See info in masthead, above, for full details).

NEWSPAPER PUBLICITY-JO HUGH has volunteered to handle newspaper publicity of our monthly meetings and other activities as part of a public relations and information project.  She has had much experience in PR with the Campfire Girls. Our thanks to BETTY BLOCK who recruited her for this key post.

IT'S ANNUAL MEETING TIME AGAIN-Marking another year of growth and expanded activities, SeniorNet will conduct its annual meeting Tuesday, March 21, starting with a continental breakfast at 9:30 am, at the Bellevue Educational Service Center, 12111 NE 1st, Bellevue. (Driving directions will be included in the upcoming meeting notice).  Highlighting the annual session, slated to conclude at 11 am, is the election of officers and the annual reports. The nominating committee the leadership of  HARRY SULLY, MARILYN EMERSON AND BOB SWENSON will present the following slate of officers: Vice President, BILL BUMPUS;  Treasurer, BOB SWENSON;  Secretary, DAVE LEWIS. At press time, the President's slot was still unfilled. The speaker will be a representative from Washington Health Card who will describe the group's new program for prescriptions for seniors on Medicare, and other health care services for those not yet on Medicare.

HOW DID I GET INVOLVED WITH SENIORNET???-Take the case of JOHN FITZGERALD who first learned of our all-volunteer group from his cousin who happens to be REGISTRAR LOUISE FLORA. According to John who lives in Seattle, he decided he wanted to join the 21st Century and learn how to really operate a computer. He is now taking his first hands-on computer class, likes it so much, he says, he has signed up for four more through the spring.

SENIORNET VETERAN HARRY SULLY was feted by a large throng of family, SeniorNet colleagues, Lions Club members and friends at Redmond's Silver Cloud Motel Last Saturday to mark his 80th birthday observance, with Lois at his side. Lois and their children and grandchildren held the party. And

sharing in the festivities was PRES. HELEN HESKETH, who also joined in greeting former SENIORNET PRES. GENE RAUSCHER, and former TREAS. DAVID BENDER. Sully is one of the original members of SeniorNet, and also remains active with the Lions Club, which works to raise money for eyesight services.

It recalled a similar gathering a few months ago when their children on their 50th wedding anniversary gave a surprise party JOE and VIOLET PONTECORVO.

OUR SKIING SENIORS, rejecting any so-called aging slowdowns, just never stop tackling the big snowy slopes. Among our most active skiers are JOE  PONTECORVO,  RAY HANSEN AND ERV VERNON.

PROTECT AGAINST SURGES by installing a reputable power surge protector to guard against frying your computer if lightning strikes power lines or there is an electrical surge, warns RAY HANSEN. He has stressed this precaution to his classes for years. Ray's four rules of thumb in getting a good protector: (1) Don't spend less than $35; (2) Be sure specs include UL 1449; (3) Get one that protects the modem phone line also; 4) Check Consumer Union's Consumer Reports in its January 2000 issue. Ray uses models from APC and Isotel, also approved by CU. And, he adds: When weather looks stormy, or you'll be away on a trip, unplug both power and phone cords from the computer.

HOW VETERANS KEEP IN TOUCH-More and more veterans keep in touch nationwide the easy way via their computers. ERV VERNON who served aboard the Navy Destroyer USS Claxton DD571, one of famed Arleigh Burke's "Little Beavers," in WW11, is proud of his group's website which provides the group's war history. Another is PHIL SCHEIER who remains in frequent touch with his WW11 squadron buddies with shared experiences in flying and working on the famed B26 medium bomber in Europe. And most include the "B26" tag in their email addresses.

MAKING IT ALL WORK-FACILITIES COORDINATOR, as in "keep those classroom computers working," is KEN CRANDALL who is the guy always working on our computers, projector etc to keep them in top operating condition.

WE NEED THE FACTS-Your Online Newsletter editor invites you to send in personal news items for upcoming issues, including personal experiences on the computer, teaching or attending SeniorNet classes, trips, space flights, Moon walks, scuba diving. Send with your phone number in case more info needed, to:  PHIL SCHEIER, b26flyer@wa.freei.net
