WHAT DO YOU WANT TO KNOW?-Class schedules? Class openings? Courses offered?

How to contact SeniorNet for other information? How to sign up? Or to find the route to the Phantom Lake School in Bellevue where classes are held? What?? This outstanding web site, the work of Web co-coordinators, HAL MOZER and JAY SCHLECHTER, has it all. The URL, a fancy name for the site address, is:  http://www.scn.org/edu/seniornet ….You can copy and paste the URL right into your browser address bar, hit Enter, and presto, you got it all. Oh yes, it helps if you get online first. And you can also use our email: srnpuget1@aol.com. In reply to some queries, SeniorNet offers training only on IBM-type computers, but does not offer Apple Macintosh training.

A WONDERFUL GRANDSON-He lives in Washington, D.C. His beloved grandma lives in Seattle. What to give grandma for a great present? According to REGISTRAR LOUISE FLORA, the grandson found our Website (See item above), working from his office in the Nation's Capital. He called on voice mail and wondered if he could give his grandma a membership in the SeniorNet Computer learning Center of Puget Sound, and a class enrollment as a Christmas gift? While he had been corresponding with her via email, and because of her obvious in wanting to learn more about computers, he decided this would be an ideal way to help grandma. Louise reports the grandson downloaded the registration material and form from our website, sent in his check, and grandma will be taking class in the Spring, compliments of her grandson.

CLASS REGISTRATIONS still under way for various course opening on an ongoing basis, according to LOUISE. She reports word processing always a popular course. Still openings in the new Word-4 class May 5-June 16. Still some openings in Internet classes, as this goes to press. They include Net-4, 5 and 6. Instructors still needed for the Windows 95/98 intermediate classes.

ACHIEVING THE BIG EIGHT-UH-UH---O----is HARRY SULLY, one of the original members and volunteers with SeniorNet, will be honored Feb. 26th with a big party by family and friends on reaching the age of seasoned wisdom, wit and still doing things for others…ON THE MEND---Curriculum Coordinator HAL MOZER recuperating from a hip replacement and the first thing he asked for was…of course…his trusty laptop computer to stay in touch. . Also mending is Online Newsletter Editor PHIL SCHEIER who is recuperating from eye cataract surgery. His spelling should improve.

SEE YOU TUESDAY, FEB. 4, around 11 am, at the Crossroads Mall for our monthly informal get-together at our Kaffee Klatch at- where else- the famed food circus there.  Just look for a couple of tables pushed together with heavy computer conversation and idea swapping by the attendees.

THINK TWICE ABOUT THOSE "free-PC or rebate deals: Our vigilant computer

consumer watcher, RAY HANSEN, issues a word of caution to prevent our fellow

Seniornetters from being stung or sorry, or both. Ray warns: Mandatory

signups on internet  service providers (ISPs)--tying you to a $20-30/mo

payment for three years or so. Especially nowadays when you can get good,

free internet connections. The free or very low-price PC might not have

features you'll need; later you could end up paying hundreds for components

you'd normally get with a regular-priced PC. Ray says this could include

needed memory for good performance, larger hard drive, extra bays etc. Also,

if you live out in the sticks where that "free" ISP doesn't have a local

phone number to access, you could wind up paying toll costs to connect. In

other words, check it out thoroughly before you tie yourself down.

HOW THEY GOT HOOKED ON COMPUTERS---There are many ways to get involved with computers, including trying to talk the talk with knowledgeable grandkids. But for students LEE and ESTHER ROSS, they  bought their computer seven years ago to access the online Automap as they planned their travels. This Bellevue couple first learned of SeniorNet from the local media, and intrigued by the possibilities in their computer, have also completed courses Introduction to Computers, Spreadsheets, Introduction DOS, and  have learned Portfolio Management. Next step is mastering cyberspace…Lee retired from Boeing and the Air Force Reserve…Esther was a nursing administrator at Group Health.

DID YOU KNOW THAT?  Nationally, there are more than 30,000 SeniorNet members, of which more than 500 are from our local computer learning center for seniors, according to PRES. HELEN HESKETH…The national goal is to establish 24 new learning centers. The national website is: www.seniornet.org…Check it out….SENIORNET GRANPALS HELP KIDS…Under the direction of PATRICIA FITZGERALD, many children at the Phantom Lake School, which houses our learning center, are being helped  advance their reading skills, thanks to our members…And the program operated in conjunction with the school, can always use more volunteers.

THINGS I NEVER KNEW UNTIL NOW-One of the handiest computer help publications around, and written in plain English,  is the Computing Book of Tips, with over 3,000 help tips, published by PC Novice, which also makes for interesting reading. (Yes, I paid my $9.95 for my own copy of this magazine).

For example: If Windows 95/98 won't start when you boot up, and then refuses to restart again, try it a few more times.  "Every time the operating system starts, it examines the hardware and peruses the Registry. It also makes adjustments to the system configuration in the Registry as it finds conflicts or other problems it thinks it can resolve. Sometimes, however, Windows 95/98 needs multiple passes to get everything resolved.  It's not unusual to boot, end up in Safe mode, restart yet again, and then find yourself back to your normal Windows 95/98 environment. Multiple restarts won't hurt anything," insists the article.

OUR THANKS to those instructors who are sending in the email addresses of their students who wish to be included in receiving this online newsletter…Send list to Phil at b26flyer@wa.freei.net
