Granpals

Granpals are volunteers assisting students, primarily in reading and math, at the Phantom Lake Elementary School in Bellevue, WA. The program was established by SeniorNet of Puget Sound to express appreciation to the school for making classroom space available to SeniorNet for computer classes for senior citizens.

Most of the Granpals schedule their volunteer times around their computer classes, either immediately before or after same. However, it is not necessary to take a class in order to be a Granpal. The Granpal program is administered by a coordinator who matches availability of individual Granpals with the requests from the Phantom Lake teachers.

Participation in the classroom is scheduled for Monday-Thursday at a time which is mutually agreeable to the teacher and the Granpal. Most volunteer sessions are for a period of approximately 1 hour, one day a week. Since many of the teachers request as many Granpals as may be available to them, any Granpal can volunteer for more than one day or for more than one class.

When an individual indicates a desire to become a Granpal, an application form is provided which is used to advise the coordinator as to what day(s) and time(s) the individual is available. It is also used to indicate the grade level at which the individual would prefer to work if such a class is available.
